How do I strategically and efficiently tailor my resume for different roles? 

There are many reasons you might find yourself having to tailor your resume for different roles. Perhaps you’re applying to the same kind of role (i.e. project manager) but for different industries. Or maybe you’re applying within the same industry (i.e. education) but for different kinds of roles (i.e. assistant principal, federal grant manager, etc.). I work with many clients who want to tailor their resume, but don’t know where to start. Here’s the guidance I provide:

  • There are many roles you might be qualified for and even interested in, but take the time to narrow down the types of roles you target to no more than 2-3. Then, you can have 2-3 resume versions instead of starting a new resume each time you apply for a role. 
  • Consider one master resume document - it can have all possible bullets, credentials, committees, etc. in one place. It doesn’t have to be beautiful and can be very long. Then, you can easily pull content into your tailored resume. 
  • You likely won’t have a ton of extra/different content for your tailored resume, but rather, you’ll want different ways of framing your existing experience. This can include changing the headline under your name, switching the order of your bullets to start with content that aligns most with your target role, adding or removing volunteer/community service experience/training/credentials/part-time roles/etc.), and ensuring the language you use to describe your experience on your resume aligns with the language used in the target job description (i.e. professional development versus training versus instructional design).
