Standing out in a competitive candidate pool

I recently connected with a client who also is a hiring manager, who is currently overseeing hiring for a key leadership role within their organization. When I asked about what differentiated successful candidates from the rest of the pool, this is was what they shared:
- Hundreds of people applied within a short period of time, many of whom applied within the first week of the job being posted. Of those, less than 25% had strong resumes which clearly shared aligned experience and results.
- The only people who moved forward without a compelling resume were those who were referred by current members of the leadership team (specifically, they’d worked together before so the leaders could speak to the candidate’s relevant experience and impact, even when the resume failed to do so).
- During interviews, successful candidates provided highly specific answers grounded in actions they’d taken in the past. Unsuccessful candidates gave theoretical, generic answers about what they might do in a situation versus how they have handled specific challenges in the past.
- Successful candidates conducted ample research on the target organization - they read recent press releases, studied the leadership team bios, and reviewed public strategic plans and other relevant documents. When asked why they were interested in working for this target company, they grounded their answers in specific examples from their research.
There’s a lot of job-seeking advice out there, but know that strong resumes do much of the heavy lifting for you. So does applying quickly (to aligned positions), providing interview answers with specific examples, and conducting your research before job interviews.
