Note from our Founder

One of the most interesting shifts I've observed over the past decade is how fluid careers have become across the education sector.

It's increasingly common to see talented leaders move between school districts, charter schools, nonprofits, state agencies, foundations, and education companies. We're also seeing more movement between the public and private sectors, as leaders bring new experiences and perspectives with them.

While every organization has its own context, many of the most effective leaders share a willingness to learn from different environments and apply those lessons in new ways.

The movement of talent across sectors isn't just changing careers. It's helping ideas, innovations, and best practices spread throughout the broader education ecosystem.

As someone who has the opportunity to work with organizations across many corners of education, I find this trend encouraging. We may work in different settings, but ultimately we're all trying to improve outcomes for students and communities.

As always, thank you for all you do in support of education.

Together,

- John

Weekly Resource

Fair Compensation Matters in the Nonprofit Sector

Fair compensation isn't a contradiction to mission-driven work- it's a necessity. This resource addresses nonprofit pay realities: why competitive salaries attract talent that drives impact, how executive compensation relates to organizational outcomes, and why front-line workers remain the sector's real compensation crisis. Sustainable missions require sustainable pay at every level.

Translating your experience for external audiences

As a jobseeker, you must serve as your own advocate, marketer, and project manager. You can also add one more role - translator. You must always remember to translate your experience, from industry-specific language to jargon from your last employer, and even regional dialect. Never wait for an employer to translate or interpret your resume, cover letter, or interview answers. Make it as easy as possible for them to see you in the role and at their organization.

A recent example: my dear friend, a pediatric nurse, lives in the US but is applying for jobs in the UK (where she has never worked before). In the UK, “pediatric” is spelled “paediatric". Her speciality, hematology, is spelled “haematology” in the UK. While my friend has never used the “pae” and “hae” spelling in her 15 years of nursing, you better believe she changed the spelling on her resume, cover letter, and any other job-seeking materials.

Even if you’re not moving across the pond, pay attention to language in job-descriptions or in conversations with industry professionals. AI assistants can also play a valuable role here in helping illuminate keywords that need modifying for different roles and industries. Same job. Same subject. Just a different way of talking about it.

If you feel strange or insincere about using unfamiliar language to describe your work in an interview, here is sample language: “I was leading [insert your initiative/your vocabulary], which is how we referred to [insert their language] at my previous employer.”
