Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Highlighting relevant, but much older, experience in your job search.
|
|
|
“I’m applying for a great role, for which I’m very qualified, but all my relevant experience is from 5 - 15 years ago. How do I present this experience in my job search, especially when on my current resume the information is buried at the bottom of page 2?”
Many of my clients come to me during a career pivot, but I also work with those looking to boomerang back to a former job function or industry. How can you frame your relevant experience when it possibly happened before anyone ever heard the term “COVID-19” (or years before that!)? Below are different strategies that can support your efforts to highlight relevant, older materials throughout your job-search.
1. Resume:
- Ensure the “headline” under your name is aligned to the role you are targeting versus the role you currently hold.
- Create a “Career Highlights” section and highlight your experience and impact from that older, but relevant position.
- In your experience section, you can still include roles in chronological order (starting with newest to oldest), but have fewer bullets for the recent work and more bullets for the older, relevant experience to ensure that relevant experience is on your first page. You can also just include relevant experience on page one of your resume, and then all other, less relevant experience, on page two (but still include bullets for both).
- Make sure to list credentials and technical skills that are relevant to that role on your resume to demonstrate your qualifications and capacity to perform.
2. LinkedIn:
- Ensure your LinkedIn “headline” aligns with the role you are targeting (and isn’t just your current job title)
- In your “About” section, highlight your relevant experience, and speak to a through line in your career even if your job functions/titles have changed over the years. If you are publicly searching for a role, name that you are actively exploring roles in this particular job function.
3. Cover Letter:
- Provide context about your pivot to a new job function and why you are now seeking to pivot back.
- Highlight your relevant experience from older positions, and how your work in recent years has provided you an even more strategic skillset while affirming your decision to pivot back.
4. Interviewing:
- Prepare a compelling story for why you’re excited to return to your previous job function. *If the reality is that you are struggling to land a job in your current job function, and feel you are most likely to get hired in today’s economic landscape in your old job function, share a different reason! Instead, highlight aspects of your old job function that brought you joy, and the problems you’re most excited to solve in your next position.
- Carefully select examples from your most relevant experience to answer interview questions. You can (and potentially should) include recent examples, but select ones that make a strong case for your capacity to perform in your old job function.
