Fighting Systemic Racism in K-12 Education: Helping Allies Move From the Keyboard to the School Board

Incredible voices are out there, they just don’t always have the resources to reach the ears that need to hear them. Here are some ways to support allies into positions of power.

What Racism in Schools Looks Like

Educators are responsible for creating a safe and inclusive environment for learners. This responsibility falls on every decision maker from student facing instructors to district leadership. Conversations need to be happening, and schools need to dive in.

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

Ignoring Racism in Schools Actually Increases Prejudice

Last week, we attended EducationWeek’s Webinar hosted by Ross Wiener, ED of the Aspen Institute Education & Society Program and Francesca López, Waterbury Chair in Equity Pedagogy at Pennsylvania State University and a co-editor of AERA’s Review of Educational Research. They spoke on their research for teaching about race and racism.

How to Share Feedback with a Hiring Manager

Today I’m continuing a series I began last week, in which I share advice for job seekers from my WorkMonger colleagues on the Talent Services team. This week, I’m sharing an insight from my colleague Sarah Mueller, Director of the Talent Services team here at WorkMonger.

Sarah and I discussed what it looks like for candidates to provide hiring managers with feedback during an interviewing process. A job seeker might want to provide feedback on topics including, but not limited to - timelines within a selection process (i.e. only given 24 hours to prepare for an interview), lack of timely communication regarding processes or hiring decisions, concerning comments made by members of a selection team, the scope of a job/salary, team structure, or other observed dynamics/interactions that raised concerns.

Because of the assumed power imbalance in a job search (especially if a job seeker is currently unemployed/underemployed while they’re interviewing), it can be tricky to provide an employer with feedback. You don’t owe an employer feedback during a hiring process, but it has the potential to create a better candidate experience for you and inform how you feel about working with a potential employer. Consider the following:

1) What is your ideal outcome after sharing your feedback? Are you hoping to share a blind spot in the selection process and potentially adjust the process, or to name an aspect of the organization or interactions with the team that you wouldn’t be comfortable with if you were to join their team? Knowing your end goal will inform how you approach providing the feedback and assess the interactions you have with the employer.

2) Can the feedback wait until after a hiring decision has been made, or does it need to happen sooner (i.e. they have requested you spend hours preparing a presentation for an interview that is 48 hours away and you either need more time or to clarify the scope of what they’re requiring)?

3) If you’re providing feedback during the interviewing process, know that the way you share feedback is going to be part of their hiring decision. If you have less experience providing feedback, consider practicing with someone you trust who has experience in the industry or that field.

4) You can ask the hiring manager or recruiter their preferred way to receive feedback - can they spare a few minutes by phone, or is email best?
