Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Is repetition ok in your hiring process?
“I have a couple projects I’ve led in recent years that I’m incredibly proud of, and which I believe truly illustrate my capacity to perform my job function. I’ve written about it in my resume, cover letter, and frequently discuss it during interviews. I’m starting to worry that I should come up with more examples. Is it ok to be repetitive if it’s a really good example?”
What if instead of calling this “repetition”, you reframed your approach as “consistent”? A candidate doesn’t need infinite examples of problems they’ve solved. Instead, they likely have a few big career wins that they’re excited to share with hiring teams. I’d love to read about a major grant you secured in a resume and cover letter, and then use an interview to probe your process and lessons learned. Instead of crafting a huge bank of stories for an interview, focus on 3-5 and get VERY specific.
Break down the process, the challenges, the team dynamics, the systems used, the outcomes, what you might have done differently, and the values that informed your work. Make connections to how you’d apply those strategies, wins, and lessons learned if hired for the new role. Leave an interview and hiring process knowing that the hiring team really knows you and your greatest hits, versus having a very surface-level understanding of EVERYTHING you’ve ever done. Your candidacy will be stronger as a result.
