How Nonprofit Employers Can Make the Hiring Process More Human

Hiring is more than filling vacancies - it's about creating an experience that reflects your mission! This guide offers six practical ways to make your hiring process more human: clear job descriptions with salary ranges, respectful timelines, consistent communication, showcasing culture, highlighting development opportunities, and treating every candidate as part of your community. What We’re Reading Right Now

What The 2026 Nonprofit Talent Market is Teaching Us Now

The nonprofit sector is navigating sustained pressure in 2026. Funding volatility affects staffing, hybrid work is standard, and competition for talent persists—especially for mid-level managers. Pay transparency and professional development have become competitive necessities. This analysis of current market dynamics provides essential context for both job seekers and hiring managers in education and nonprofits.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Should I reach out to recruiters/hiring managers proactively?

Should you reach out to recruiters or hiring managers proactively as part of your networking strategy?

The advice is SO mixed on this one.

I used to say, “yes, absolutely!” to that question. Armed with that kind of guidance, jobseekers have been emailing recruiters and hiring managers, asking for “a few minutes of their time to learn more about roles on their team.” The reality is that while getting facetime with a recruiter or hiring manager at your target organization can help elevate your candidacy, recruiters and hiring managers likely don’t have time to engage with every person who reaches out (especially at very popular organizations which have large candidate pools).

If your interest is in joining a school district, this advice may still work. Districts compete for talent for so many of their open roles, from the classroom to the central office. As a recruiter, I LOVED receiving cold emails from highly qualified candidates who were interested in exploring opportunities (especially when they were in hard-to-fill content roles, technical roles, or coming from peer organizations). If you’d like to try this strategy with a school district recruiter, consider doing the following:

  1. Check their job boards to see if there are any current openings which are a match for your skills, experience, and interest.
  2. Find contact information for a recruiter. Typically, you can find a generic recruiter/talent email on the careers page.
  3. Be direct in your outreach, sharing exactly what you hope to get from a meeting. Here’s an idea:

Subject: Discuss opportunities at [insert district name]/ Discuss [team/content] opportunities at [insert district name]?

Hi [district name] Talent Team,

My name is [insert name] and I’m a [insert job function].

I was reviewing opportunities on your job board and didn’t see anything currently posted that seems like a match for my experience at this time. I know hiring typically picks up this time of year as you prepare for 2026-2027, and so I wanted to introduce myself and inquire if there are any upcoming job-fairs, networking events, or an opportunity to connect with your team to learn about potential opportunities on the [insert team name] team? I’ve attached my resume so you can learn some more about my experience.

Thanks for your time! Hope to hear from your team soon.

Best,

Your name
