Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

If I apply to the “wrong” job, will a recruiter let me know what job to apply to instead?

Imagine you open up an employer’s list of job openings and see multiple roles which align with your skills and interests. Should you apply for all of them, or just one. And if you apply for one, but would be a better fit for a different role, will a hiring manager or recruiter let you know? Here’s how I addressed those topics with a recent client:

I always advise job seekers to apply for just one role at a company/organization/school district versus multiple (unless that specific employer recommends otherwise).

Though you might think that applying for multiple roles increases your chances of being noticed, it might actually make you seem less clear on your goals and aware of your strengths.

If you’re not sure which role to apply for, consider reaching out to someone you know at the organization, the recruiter, or hiring manager. This will allow you to get valuable insight and build a relationship with the recruiter. Here’s a template:

Dear Recruiter,

I’ve been following your organization for some time and was excited to see a few new job listings which align with my areas of expertise and interest. I have a couple of questions prior to applying – would you be open to a very quick phone call to discuss the roles and organization? I’ve attached a copy of my resume in case that’s helpful!

Best, Name

In an ideal world, if you apply for the “wrong” position, or perhaps you applied too late and the position is closed, a recruiter will redirect you to another role or hold on to your application for the future. Not all Talent Acquisition teams have the capacity or systems in place to do that, or a long-term strategy which leads to that happening (survival mode is real!).

You are more likely to receive a redirection from a recruiter (applying for a different position, or saving your application for future, more aligned roles) if you take the time to submit a highly personalized cover letter (which addresses why you’re interested in that organization and position, and how you can add value), and a resume which provides a strong record of results (versus responsibilities).
