Humility Will Not Get You Hired
|
I frequently find myself sharing with clients that humility will not get them hired. Too often, fearing they’ll appear arrogant or proud, jobseekers fail to take credit for work they led or they minimize the amazingness of their unique set of experiences, skills, and values. It is not proud to know your strengths, or the ways you’ve developed your skill-set. Rather, humility can be demonstrated in how you approached the work - lessons you learned along the way, mistakes you made, ways you grew, people you partnered with, etc.

If you find yourself struggling to own your accomplishments, it can be helpful to create a document listing out awards you’ve won, recognitions you’ve received, professional goals you’ve met (think about quantitative goals within your job, ones typically covered in performance reviews). I also recommend answering the following questions for yourself -
-
- What are the big goals I accomplished in my last role? (include the scope of the projects, the problem that you were solving, and the quantifiable results)
- What are my professional strengths? (if you’re not sure, reflect on the projects you immediately step up to work on, or the times people have approached you for help because you’ve distinguished yourself in a particular area).
- How did I develop my strengths? (think of work you’ve taken on, fellowships you’ve joined, training you engaged in, specific initiatives you’ve led, etc.)
- When someone hires you, what problems do I solve? (where do you have a lot of content expertise, what problems have you previously solved?)
- What are my values and how do they play out in my work?
Update and refer to this document frequently, whether you need a reminder of your professional super powers, you’re updating your resume, or preparing for an interview.
