Preserving Your Energy And Joy During a Long Job Search

I recently led a training for a group of educators and education professionals on navigating a successful job search. A theme surfaced from their questions - “How can we preserve our energy and joy during this job search?”

The reality is, finding a new job can take time, especially if you’re pivoting fields or industries. What you thought might take weeks could take months, or longer. Here are some best practices for staying motivated throughout:

  • Apply for targeted roles versus ALL the roles. It can be easy to identify every job you’re qualified for and apply and see what happens, but that’s overwhelming and a ton of work. Instead, tailor your job seeking tools for specific positions and network strategically.
  • Get organized – track your applications, create a folder for all your job seeking documents. This will help you avoid reinventing the wheel and access information quickly.
  • Set goals for what you hope to accomplish weekly. If you just focus on the end goal of finding a new job, you might feel unsuccessful until you meet that goal. Instead, set mini goals around each step of the process - updating your materials, networking, applying, increasing your LinkedIn connections, etc.
  • Make time to recharge/do things that bring you joy. Whether that’s exercise, time with loved ones, watching tv, etc.
  • Ask for help and/or a pep talk when you need it. In my work with clients, I’ve seen some of the most amazing professionals get weighed down by a long job search. They forget how amazing they are! It’s ok to ask people to remind you of your value if you’re not initially getting that validation from your job search efforts.
