Preparing for your end-of-year performance reviews

As we approach 2024, many organizations will be conducting performance reviews, whether they’re classified as end-of-year or mid-year (school districts consider the school year’s end their end-of-year). Here are some pro-tips for preparing for these conversations:

  1. Document and quantify your accomplishments. No one will know the ins and outs of all you’ve achieved or the contributions you’ve made as well as you, and if you’re leaving it to your manager to share these things they may leave important things out.
  2. List out your strengths and areas of opportunity. Demonstrating self-awareness about your contributions to your team and organization are not enough - share what you’re actively working on and come prepared with ideas for further development (i.e. meeting with a coach, receiving more training, including those focus areas on your weekly check-in, etc.).
  3. Reflect on your short and long-term goals. Do you want to move into a leadership position on your team, or take on new work streams? Maybe you’d like to try your hand at running meetings or initiatives that weren’t previously part of your job description.
  4. Identify questions you have for your manager. Are there changes they anticipate within the organization, big programs on the horizon, funding challenges you’ve heard about, etc.? This is a great time to ask (though your manager may not have answers).
  5. Conduct market research on total compensation. Consider the industry, job function, level of seniority, and similar-sized organizations. Don’t make the mistake of simply waiting for your manager to offer a raise or bonus - come prepared with numbers, employee benefits, and rationale for your request (based on your value add to the team and market research).
