2025 has flown by, and Thanksgiving is next week! With that in mind, gratitude is always in season, and November reminds us to intentionally show appreciation to our teams. Not sure where to start? Begin by planning to recognize your staff. This article shares ideas from easy wins you can implement now to strategies for year-round appreciation!

This week's focus on employee appreciation connects directly to a bigger question: what legacy are you building? True appreciation isn't just saying "good job" or handing out chocolates (though chocolate helps); it's investing in people's growth. Your legacy won't be PowerPoints or metrics. It's whether you made people feel valued and saw their potential before they did.

What We’re Reading Right Now
|
Resilience has nothing to do with "toughing it out". Feeling valued, having real support from leadership, and remembering the ‘why’ are key for building resilience in teachers (and really any other profession!). For leaders building their legacy.. this is it. When you genuinely appreciate teachers (or employees) and connect them to purpose, you create something that lasts.

Applying for your first leadership positions
|
|
|
As winter approaches, school districts prepare to launch their school-based leadership hiring. By filling leadership positions early, they have plenty of time to backfill the teacher vacancies that result from educators moving into their first dean, instructional coaching, and assistant principal positions. At WorkTogether, we are receiving inquiries from educators planning on applying for their first campus-based leadership positions (at their own district, or others), and unclear how to begin updating their resumes and interview answers. Here is some guidance:
- Plan backwards. with the leadership profile in mind. Review the job description and clarify the requirements for a successful candidate. This includes years of experience, relevant degrees and certifications, and ample examples of leadership (even if it’s informal). Make sure you qualify before you begin to blindly apply!
- Update your materials. Some of my clients haven’t updated their resumes since they applied for their teaching positions at their schools many years ago. Add new job titles and results from your experience. Data speaks for itself!
- Make a connection between your target role and transferable experience. For teachers applying for campus leadership positions, this means reflecting on your formal and informal leadership experience, such as mentoring of new teachers, leading grade-level teams, writing new curriculum, sponsoring student clubs, serving on recruiting committees, etc.
- Make your intentions clear. Before applying for leadership roles within your district or campus, connect with your principal about your goals. They can serve as your best champions, advocating for your candidacy to hiring managers and even coaching you throughout your hiring process. They may also provide guidance about timing - perhaps they recommend you wait another year to gain more experience or wait for a particular role to open.
