Rebuilding Relationships Across Teams in a Hybrid Workplace

WorkMonger is currently supporting searches for a number of remote positions. We’re finding it increasingly important to ask candidates how they build relationships with new teams in a virtual or hybrid environment. Whether you’re returning to your team, or joining a new one, those relationships need to be built again.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Which Recruiter to Reach Out to Within a Large Organization?

I was recently supporting a senior-level client who was hoping to connect directly with a recruiter at her target employer prior to applying for a role. Unless the recruiter’s contact information is listed directly on the job description, LinkedIn is my go-to place for finding and connecting with them. In the case of my client, we turned to LinkedIn, but when we went to search for recruiters employed by that company there were over 30 results! Below I’ll share some context and the way I advised my client:

Entry level recruiters likely spend more time on recruiting operations (screening applications, searching for candidates on LinkedIn, coordinating interviews), while senior-level recruiters likely work directly with a hiring manager and spend more time cultivating relationships with candidates.

Within large organizations, recruiters also often specialize in specific departments (This is also true with school districts - one recruiter may focus on all the high schools or a particular feeder pattern, and another on central office teams or school/central office leadership hiring). With that in mind, you should be strategic on who you reach out to on LinkedIn. Here’s how I advised my client:

  1. First, we got specific on her target roles/teams/level of seniority.
  2. Next, we looked at several recruiter profiles on LinkedIn for that company. We determined who may work directly with her target teams, and who was also more likely to be the kind of recruiter who spoke directly with candidates (we read their experience section, and looked for clues like headlines/profile pictures that said “Hiring!”.)
  3. From there, we identified a couple of recruiters (out of more than 30) and my client, who had a premium LinkedIn account, messaged them directly (if you don’t have a premium account, you can also send a recruiter a connection invite with a short, personalized message).
