How to discreetly job search when you work in an externally facing role
|
|
|
Sales, Fundraising, Recruitment, Marketing, Communications, Partnerships, Government Relations - these are some of the job functions where so much of your brand feels tied up with that of your employer. You represent them on panels, in meetings with prospective clients or partners, via your social media content, and more. If you’re doing your job well, people external to your organization really connect you with the employer. This is GREAT if you’re staying put. Not so great if you’re quietly job-searching.
First off, a question I sometimes receive - is it ok to discreetly job-search while currently employed? YES. Absolutely yes. Your loyalty is to yourself, not your employer!
Second, how do you navigate promoting the organization externally when you’re also quietly planning your exit? There’s not one way to do this, but things to consider:
- Keep in-mind where you apply/who you speak to about your search. Is your CEO or a board member at your current organization connected to the target employers?
- Ask for discretion. Don’t assume everyone will know to be discreet. They may not know you’re quietly searching and could accidentally mention you to your current employer (i.e. “You must be bummed that Max is leaving your org!”)
- When you ask for discretion, be cool. No need to make a big deal out of it. Just say “At this time, I haven’t shared my potential exit with my employer. Thank you in advance for your discretion.”
- If you’re asked why you’re leaving your current employer, go high! Never throw anyone under the bus - your future employer will worry that you’ll do that to them too. Instead, focus less on your current employer and instead emphasize why you’re attracted to this new employer. “I’ve had a really great run at [insert current employer]. In my time there, I’ve found that where I get the most energy is [name a function or aspect of the work that is integral to this future opportunity]. When I saw your job posting/spoke with your recruiter, I knew I’d be remiss if I didn’t explore this opportunity with your team. It’s so aligned with how I want to spend my time and the work I really love performing.”
- Create a list of potential references that aren’t your current boss. If they want to speak to someone at your organization, consider a peer who you can trust, and then former bosses from other organizations (or who no longer work for your employer).
