How to manage a discreet job search
A big part of a job search strategy involves putting yourself out there. Networking, updating your LinkedIn profile, applying to jobs, and notifying references are all part of a successful job search plan. I hear from many job seekers who have concerns about conducting an effective job search discreetly (i.e. making sure their current employer doesn’t find out). Here are some tips:
- Job search when you’re off the clock. If you have to conduct an interview during the day and are at work, try to go to a private place, like your car (if you have one), or take a half day. If you plan to take a call outside, be mindful that outside noises (wind/cars/other people) can be distracting for both you and the recruiter/employer on the other line.
- Update your privacy settings on LinkedIn before you make any profile changes to ensure that your contacts are not notified of all your new content.
- When networking and/or interviewing, it is perfectly acceptable to ask for discretion as you have not yet notified your current employer about your search. Offer references who are former managers and provide a timeline for when you’d be comfortable notifying your manager (i.e. when an offer is made).
