Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Should a cover letter include different information than your resume?
|
|
|
Recent client question - “Is it ok to repeat information in a cover letter that is already in your resume?” My answer: YES!
It’s understandable that updating all your job seeking materials, networking, and practicing for interviews can make you feel repetitive. In this case, repetition is strategic. If you find that you’re trying to save great examples of your work for different mediums, you may find those great examples get missed! Instead, consider how you can share the same impact in different ways:
- Resume: demonstrate record of results across past roles, along with your credentials, and, when applicable, thought leadership, volunteer work, professional affiliations, etc..
- Cover letter: elevate relevant results from your resume which demonstrate your capacity to perform this role, with this employer.
- Interview: share more context for your record of results - what was the situation, what challenges did you overcome, and what mindsets did you employ as you approached that situation?
Repetition of your impact will build your confidence and credibility with your audience.
