The Story Behind Juneteenth and How It Became a Federal Holiday

Americans have celebrated Juneteenth, marking the day when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free. However, it was only in 2021 that President Joe Biden signed a bill passed by Congress to set aside Juneteenth, or June 19th, as a federal holiday. Here is a look at the origins of Juneteenth, how it became a federal holiday, and

more about its history.

The Story We’ve Been Told About Juneteenth Is Wrong

Juneteenth was the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was enshrined, in 1983, and a signal achievement in American history—drawing the country one step closer to publicly acknowledging its original sin of slavery. Yet the real history of Juneteenth is much more nuanced than what we are aware of and remains largely unknown.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Maximizing the “open to work” feature on LinkedIn with job titles

Did you know you can publicly or privately let recruiters on LinkedIn know that you are actively seeking roles and the kind of job titles that speak to you through the “open to work” feature?

Education and Nonprofit Recruiters are charged with filling roles quickly with the most qualified, mission-aligned talent. When you turn on the “open to work” feature on LinkedIn, either publicly or privately for recruiters, you’re communicating with recruiters that you are open to making a quick move. AND, when you specify the exact roles which appeal to you, you’re ensuring recruiters are more likely to reach out to you about aligned openings.

Here’s some guidance to consider before listing roles:

  1. You can list up to 5 job titles, but they must pre-populate through LinkedIn. If you find the job title you enter is not an option, find the next best thing.
  2. Consider the story you are telling with the 5 job titles you list - are they all in the same function? While candidates believe listing many different options can increase the opportunities for which they are considered, it may make them appear unfocused instead (for example, someone who lists all the following titles: “Teacher” and “Graphic Designer” and “Restaurant Manager” and “Office Manager” would appear like they don’t know what they want and are a flight risk to a potential employer). Do your best to list roles which are similar in nature (though they may differ in seniority, for example listing “Fundraising manager” and “fundraising director”) or very transferable skills (i.e. “recruiter” and “customer success manager” and “partnership manager” all are roles where relationship-building/partnerships with external stakeholders  are key functions of the role).
  3. List roles for which you are qualified. Even if your dream is to be a “Superintendent,” but your current job title is “Reading Specialist,” it may appear that you lack self awareness. That being said, don’t undersell yourself! That’s why it can be helpful to list a few levels of seniority for the same job function (i.e. “Manager” and”Director”).

Ultimately, this is one small tool in a job-seeking tool-kit. If you find that recruiters aren’t reaching out to you about the job titles you have listed, make sure to audit the rest of your profile - does your work experience reflect your qualifications for these roles? Do you have content which shares the story of your impact in previous roles?
