How to Keep a Workplace Happy in a Divided Political Moment

This piece from Senior Lecturer in Organizational Behavior at Yale, Heidi Brooks, emphasizes that, rather than banning political discussions, workplaces can benefit from cultivating a culture of respect, compassion, and curiosity. By prioritizing how conversations are conducted, leaders can help maintain a positive atmosphere where differences are respected, allowing employees to navigate political divisions without harming workplace dynamics.

How NOT to communicate a growth mindset

What sounds like a good idea in theory that is actually a bad idea in practice? My take: sharing how much you look forward to learning and growing as a professional as a reason you’re interested in a role.

YES, a growth mindset is typically at the top of any employer’s list of must-haves when interviewing candidates. But, a growth mindset  is not the same thing as your own personal desire to grow personally and professionally. As much as any employer communicates a commitment to their team’s growth and success, their number one goal is to meet their own objectives and advance their work. Their employees’ personal and professional growth is only important if it aligns directly with the growth goals of the organization.

You becoming a better, smarter human for the sake of bettering yourself is simply not compelling..

So how can you convey your commitment to advancing an organization’s goals and an existing growth mindset without focusing solely on your own personal/professional gains? Here are some ideas:

  • “I’m looking to join a team and organization with a demonstrated commitment to learning and development. I look forward to receiving targeted feedback that will help me sharpen my leadership focus and advance the work of [insert company goals].” This works because the growth mindset is still in service of achieving the company goals, versus your own personal goals.
  • “I’m particularly attracted to working under [insert manager name] because I’ve followed their work for years and know they are truly an incredible leader to learn from. As I grow my own leadership in the [insert your job function] space, I’m excited to work with someone who will challenge and develop me as I work toward our ambitious goals.” This works because it demonstrates understanding of the landscape and previous research on the organization, and again is a focus on you growing in a particular functional area that can add value to the employer.
  • “I’m especially excited about this role because of your focus on [insert aspects of the job function that speak to you]. I’ve been eager to shift in this direction, and am incredibly excited to leverage my background in [list your current, aligned expertise] to add value right away.” This works because it demonstrates self awareness that you may have less experience in a particular area, while also making the connection about your transferable skills and your eagerness to grow.

BIG IDEA: move away from focusing on your desire to grow as a person, and instead make connections about how you desire to grow and learn is a bonus for the employer!
