Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
I had a bad experience with a recruiter. What should I do about it?
Most weeks, clients and readers send in their job-search questions to be addressed in our weekly career corner. Check out this recent question and Ana’s answer: I’m interviewing for a role but the recruiter’s communication is inconsistent and they keep missing the status update deadlines they set and shared with me. When they do reach out, they never acknowledge they’ve missed deadlines and then ask for me to be available at inconvenient times. I’m excited about the role but feeling increasingly frustrated and devalued with this process - what can I do about this?
As a former recruiter, I get frustrated just hearing this! Not all deadlines can be met, but a recruiter (or the hiring manager), should own when they haven’t met a deadline and do their best to provide a transparent and thoughtful candidate experience. Simply saying, “though we originally communicated you’d hear from us on Wednesday, we are still interviewing candidates and will need to update you on Monday instead. We appreciate your understanding and commit to following up on Monday. Thank you for your engagement in the process.”
If you’re not receiving these kinds of communications and are instead ghosted for weeks or receiving inconsistent updates, you have a few options:
Option 1: Stay in the process and provide the recruiter with some feedback about your experience. This can sound like “I’m incredibly excited about this role, but the inconsistent communication and missed update deadlines have been challenging. Please provide an update and the next steps in the process and the dates for which I can expect to hear from you or your team.” How the recruiter responds will be very telling - do they send an update, own the inconsistency, or completely disregard your message?
Option 2: Withdraw from the process and share direct feedback about your experience, “I was incredibly excited about the opportunity, but the inconsistent communications from your team and frequent missed update deadlines have been incredibly challenging. I am interviewing for other opportunities at this time with processes that are moving quicker and with more frequent touchpoints. Should your timeline accelerate, please keep me in mind.
Option 3: Withdraw from the process and share no feedback about your experience, just that you are pursuing other options.
