The Inclusive Professional Development Book List You've Been Waiting For

In last week’s edition, we discussed the ways companies are failing to properly engage in the DEI conversation. A common issue is that companies are having important conversations during the hiring process but then drop off the continued development of employees. Building DEI work into your Professional Development plans ensures that work makes the lasting changes your organization aims for.

Declining a Role After Accepting a Role

Last week, I shared a strategy for jobseekers requesting an expedited interview/decision timeline due to competing job offers/opportunities. But what should you do if you have to accept or decline a job offer before you’ve received updates from the other employers? Here are some things to consider as you’re planning your approach:

Most employers expect a candidate to accept or decline an offer within a week. Consider asking for a decision extension. At the same time, let the other organization know that you have a competing job offer and ask if they can expedite their process.

If the employers cannot extend or accelerate their timelines, you have a decision to make. If you turn down the first job offer because you are more interested in the opportunity with the other employer, you run the risk of losing out on the first opportunity without having a back-up plan. And if you accept the first job offer, and then the second job offer comes a few weeks later, you run the risk of burning a bridge with the first employer if you suddenly quit or decline the offer.

The reality is, you might have to have an uncomfortable conversation with one or more employers. How you navigate those conversations can determine whether or not you can apply for roles with those employers in the future. If you ultimately decide to accept the first job, and then a few weeks later you decide to decline because a better offer came along, approach with honesty and care. Here are some tips:

  1. Don’t ghost (i.e. just never show up to your new job).
  2. Consider a phone call versus an email. It’s a chance to thank the employer and share some context about your decision (the salary was higher, there was a hybrid work option, the role better aligned with your goals, etc.).
  3. Share your sincere hope that you can stay in-touch, especially should timelines/roles/goals align in the future.
  4. If applicable, refer other candidates to the role.
