Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

When an interviewing process gives you pause…

Has a hiring process ever given you pause? Perhaps the timeline is surprisingly accelerated, the questions particularly invasive, the job description is vague, or you just get a weird vibe after connecting with the hiring team. How should you proceed?

  1. If you’re less experienced with hiring processes, consider connecting with someone you trust to get their reaction - perhaps the thing(s) that bother you are actually now standard operating practices.
  2. If you have the chance to connect with the hiring team, inquire more about the aspects of the process that feel off. Reiterate your excitement about the role and organization, and then proceed with: “I was hoping we could discuss the process in more detail. In particular, I noticed [insert the thing that feels off] is much different than others I’ve experienced in my job search. Can you [share more about the rationale behind this]/[ask if there’s any opportunity to amend this part of the process, within reason]?”
  3. Consider how your requests/questions are met by the hiring team. Do they get defensive or do they provide rationale and properly address your concerns? Given how they responded, are you still interested in continuing on in this process? If you decide to exit the process, review last week’s career corner for some best practices to graciously withdraw.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had clients share with me that they should have known their current employer would be a bad fit given their weird experience in a hiring process, but they ignored their worries and continued on. But also know that what feels weird may just be a misunderstanding, and giving an employer the opportunity to clarify can position everyone for a great experience.
