Professional Development Resources for Education Leaders
In this edition of Leaders in Education, we will be focusing on professional development for non-teaching professionals.
With COVID-19 quarantines in effect around the world, the Project Management Institute (PMI) is making a wide range of project management training materials available online for free to help at-home workers add to and bolster their skills as organizations rethink work processes and procedures. Project management skills can be extremely beneficial during times of emergency such as the pandemic. Project management initiatives play an important role in preparing for these types of disruptions. All work is accomplished through programs and projects, and project managers are used to changing methods and approaches. By learning processes to adapt to change, leaders and workers can be ready to pivot as needed in any situation.
How much have you grown as a professional in the last five to ten years? Think about all the people who helped you get to where you are now. Your relationship with your employer is one of the most critical components of your career growth. This is especially important if you plan on spending significant time there. How can you tell if your employer is supportive of your professional development? Here are five signs your company cares about where you’re going - and how they’re helping you get there.
Properly articulating your goal can be the difference between you achieving your goals or falling short. A well-written goal turns an abstract, amorphous idea into something tangible that you can achieve. “SMART” goals are a helpful framework for writing a goal in a way that sets you up for success. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. This guide provides a framework and examples to help you write good goals.
Professional development doesn’t have to be a drag. If you’re looking for creative and innovative ways to engage your employees and help them grow in their professional roles, you must focus on how you are helping them grow. Engage your employees while collaborating remotely with these 27 tips.
How does online training benefit professionals around the globe? Some employers may offer training options before an employee becomes permanent. This training does not end before the job begins but rather continues through online courses and brushing up on new concepts and technologies. This art of knowledge transfer via the internet is one of the many advantages of improving a professional’s personal and professional growth. Here are the 9 main advantages of online training.
Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
In the world of Education, we are well acquainted with Professional Development. As a teacher, I engaged with PD weekly, and even as a district and nonprofit recruiter, I frequently designed and led PD or attended ongoing training myself. High-quality professional development is always a great idea, and it’s an especially effective way to prepare yourself for potential career pivots as the market continues changing in response to COVID-19. But how do you know what kind of PD to pursue?
1. Look at new job postings from late March and early April. Identify who in the Education space is posting new jobs. 2. Read the job descriptions. What technical skills do they seek in applicants? Perhaps it’s strong knowledge of a specific software or Microsoft tools. Maybe it’s knowledge of coding! 3. Reach out to individuals who are working in high-demand areas (like EdTech or school districts). Use LinkedIn to search by employer/job title or ask friends to refer individuals in those careers. Request informational calls and use them as an opportunity to seek advice about the skills that are most valuable in their line of work and ways to attain them. 4. Check out online learning platforms. Many offer free courses and certificates upon completion for a small fee. 5. Update your resume/LinkedIn profile with your new skills! If you are currently unemployed, you can consider listing your current job title as “Professional Student” and employer as “Independent” (just an idea) and list out the courses/skills you are pursuing and have completed. This eliminates a gap in your work history (though it’s totally understandable if you have one at this time!) and demonstrates your desire to continue learning and expanding your expertise in high-demand areas.
