Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

On an almost daily basis, I receive an email like this: “Ana! I’ve been invited to an interview and they asked to meet with me tomorrow. What are the most high-impact things I can do in the next 24 hours to prepare?”
In an ideal world, you’d have more than 24 hours (or less!), but the reality is that hiring teams often move quickly once they review applications in an effort to close their positions as quickly as possible.
As I often say, anytime a job is open, it means a problem exists within an organization (a skill gap, capacity gap, mindset gap, or a combination). With that in-mind, here’s how I would encourage you to approach interview prep:
- Review the job description and, when possible, connect with people who may offer insight about the team and organization. I find ChatGPT useful in quickly analyzing job descriptions for themes (“Can you distill the top skills in this job description? Here is the job description [insert JD]” or “Can you pull out themes in this job description? Here is the job description [insert JD]”)
- From there, ensure you are well-versed in the ways you are well-positioned to solve that problem. What are examples of similar problems you've solved (i.e. having a list of projects/initiatives/programs you've led and the related outcomes)? What is the secret sauce you bring that is worth articulating very clearly?
- Review the employer’s website, paying special attention to their “About” page, and reading about their Mission/Vision. If you have easy access to the strategic plan or annual report, skim that too!
- Using ChatGPT, identify possible technical interview questions (i.e. “What questions can I expect in an interview based on this job description? Here is the job description [insert JD]” Also practice answering questions like, “tell me about yourself” and “why are you interested in this role and our organization?”
Every answer you give is an opportunity to connect the dots for the interviewer about what positions you to add value - don’t wait for them to do that heavy lifting for you!
