Viewpoint: Don’t Underestimate the Importance of Exit Interviews

When looking for ways to improve your hiring and recruitment process, exit interviews might not immediately spring to mind. However, they're an excellent opportunity to hold up a mirror to your company and see what's working and what isn't.

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

Why (And How) To Use Exit Surveys and Exit Interviews Together

The Great Resignation has resulted in significant data about why employees are leaving their organizations. HR teams shouldn’t let that data go to waste. Leveraging exit surveys and exit interviews together can help human resources teams gain a deeper understanding of reasons for turnover in their organization, and make improvements to the employee experience.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How often should you update your LinkedIn profile and other job-seeking materials?

I work with so many clients who share with me that they haven’t touched their LinkedIn profile in years, and that they’ve been adding to the same resume document since college (and it shows - super long and some outdated features, like objective statements, inclusion of internships from 10+ years ago, etc.). So how often should you update your materials?

For those of us who have engaged in long job searches, the idea of continuing to maintain your job-seeking materials even after landing a great role might sound exhausting. Here are my pro-tips for easy maintenance:

  • Keep an easily accessible folder on your desktop/google drive with past job-seeking materials for easy reference. You will really appreciate having this in the future!
  • Include a document where you can add projects you’re working on/leading and goals you’re working towards (trust me - you’ll really appreciate having this written down in one place when you start a new job search!). So many of my clients struggle with accessing past data and finding the specifics about initiatives they worked on.
  • Make time at least 2-4 times a year to check your resume and LinkedIn profile - is your job title accurate? How about your LinkedIn headline? Are you reflecting your current value proposition? For example, I reviewed a client’s LinkedIn profile this week that focused entirely on instructional leadership, but they shared with me that they are more of a product manager and instructional project manager these days - what they were putting out there on LinkedIn did not align at all with their current work or target roles!

You don’t need to be actively in a job search to review your materials and LinkedIn profile for a few minutes every 3-4 months. Your future self will thank you!
