How Employers Can Use Structured Interviews to Reduce Bias in Hiring

Interviewers, like everyone else, have biases that shape the way they perceive and relate to others, and those biases are hard to manage in interview settings. The article lays out three different ways in which structured interviews can help reduce bias in hiring.

Hiring Bias – Create a Fairer Hiring Process

Everyone has biases, whether they realize it or not. Rather than allowing those biases to unfairly affect the hiring process, organizations can set up guardrails to guide the process toward more equitable outcomes.

Recruiting Biases: Which Ones to Watch Out For?

There are many different types of hiring biases and knowing what they are is the first step toward more objective hiring. So what are they and how can they guide (or misguide) a hiring decision?

Should I Be Concerned If A Job I Want to Apply to Has Been Posted For A Long time?

A client of mine is about to interview for a role that has been posted for several months. They expressed concern about why the position has been posted that long - did everyone else decline?

There are many reasons why a position might be posted for several months, and here’s a non-exhaustive list (also, every situation is unique and dependent on so many factors we might never know):

  • The hiring team is moving slowly when it comes to reviewing applications and conducting interviews.
  • Early offers were declined and the hiring team has started the process all over again, perhaps even reconsidering the scope of the role and what they seek in a candidate.
  • The salary is not actually competitive, and therefore the organization is not attracting the caliber of candidates they desire.
  • There might be disagreement among senior leadership about the budget and the scope of the role and it could be on pause.
  • They are close to making an offer but are curious if more competitive candidates will still apply.
  • The position has actually been filled and someone forgot to take down the posting (unlikely but it happens!)

A position posted for more than a month is not an immediate flag, but it’s ok to be curious - especially before you invest a lot of time and energy into an application and interviewing process. If you’re excited about the role but concerned that there are flags in the process or in the role/company itself that you want to avoid, you can try the following:

  • If you know someone working at the organization, reach out informally to see if they can provide some intel before you apply. And if you don’t know someone, a recruiter may be able to provide context.
  • When reaching out to a recruiter or hiring manager in advance of applying, or even during the interview process, you can use language like this:

“I noticed the position has been posted for [insert amount of time], which seems to be an outlier compared to the amount of time other open roles on your team have been posted on your website. Can you share more context about what you’ve experienced in the hiring process?”
