  • Reframe “networking” as “information gathering” and “relationship building.” You’ll immediately rethink how you’re approaching those meetings!
  • Know your goals for the conversation - insight into a particular company or career, guidance on pivoting industries or moving cities, advice on interviewing for a particular role, etc.
  • Draft questions in advance and be ready to frame the conversation.
  • Here’s a suggested framework for your meeting:
    • Introduce yourself and share your value proposition
    • Frame the conversation: why you’re excited to speak to them & what you’re hoping to learn during the conversation
    • Ask your scripted questions but also be responsive to the flow of the conversation!
    • Take notes if that helps you process and retain new information.
    • End the call by sharing your takeaways from the conversation, including any next steps you may take as a result.
    • Thank them and consider suggesting ways you may support them given the topics you discussed (sending a book recommendation, referring talent, etc.)
  • Send a thank you email and stay in touch!
