Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

In this edition of Leaders in Education, we are bringing you the latest diversity, equity, and inclusion resources.

The ABCs of DEI

DEI is such an important, all-encompassing topic. It can feel a little overwhelming to dive into the work if your company hasn’t focused on it in the past. However, don’t let the barrier to entry stop you! It all starts with learning and listening. Here are some basics on DEI.

Companies Are Setting DEI Goals and Changing Their Cultures, One Step At a Time

Conversations about sexual orientation, race and religion may seem out of place at work, but talking about those issues is exactly what needs to happen to change a culture and embrace diversity. Read how leaders are starting at the ground floor and taking everyday action.

Women in the Workplace 2020

McKinsey’s annual Women in the Workplace study helps to illustrate thousands of women's experiences. From highlighting the larger gaps in entry-level management to the discussion of the disproportionate impact from COVID, the 2020 year report is a must read for all leaders.

Working for Social Justice isn’t a ‘Distraction’ for Mission-Focused Companies

In the current world, choosing to opt-out of political discourse or not actively working for social justice causes should no longer be an option but an integral part of any organization. As leaders, it is important to be aware of how these issues affect your employees' daily life, and what to do in order to best support them.

Facing White Supremacy by Focusing on Power, People, and Practice

Every day we experience compounding forms of racism through acts of violence, unchecked power, hypocrisy, and a lack of accountability that uphold white supremacy, and it’s time to challenge our complacency by naming what it is and when it happens. This article shows the framework to discuss this at work by focusing on power, people and practice.

Op-ed: Nonprofits Need to Catch Up on Diversifying Their Boards

Up until recently, despite comparably abysmal representation and pledges for reform, nothing tangible or broad has been proposed by the social sector in order to diversify their boards. Nonprofit boards should take collective leadership on this issue before they are pushed to do so by external forces.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Are you familiar with the term “total compensation”? If not, time to get acquainted!

Total compensation refers to your base salary + the additional money that employers invest in your benefits/perks (think medical/dental insurance, matching 401K, child care reimbursements, paid time off, bonuses, partnerships with gyms or apartment complexes). Too often, job seekers, especially those newer to the professional world, only consider salary when exploring new roles or negotiating an offer. Here’s my guidance on learning about total compensation at your target employer and approaching negotiation.

  • Many employers will include information about their standard benefits packages for all employees on the “Careers” tab of their website.
  • Ask around to learn what’s standard in your industry. What kind of retirement support can you expect? What is the typical amount of paid time off?
  • Make a list of your non-negotiables around total compensation - are you seeking an employer with on-site daycare or mileage reimbursement?
  • Know that the vast majority of employers expect you to negotiate your offer, whether it’s salary or additional benefits. Don’t be afraid to ask - otherwise; you might be leaving money or other perks on the table!

Pay Equity & Women in the Workplace in the Age of COVID-19

Earlier this year the World Economic Forum released the 2020 Global Gender Gap Report in which it highlighted that it will be close to 100 years before we see gender parity. A more sobering realization is that due to COVID-19, and the re-imagined workplace where work and home responsibilities have intersected, many women are scaling back their careers. In a recent Department of Labor report on unemployment, women have left the workforce at four times the rate of men. Learn more in this diversity deep dive into pay equity and women in the workplace.
