Note from our Founder

The hiring market has shifted a few times over the past few years—and it’s shifting again.

While it’s no longer the candidate-driven market of 2021–22, it’s also not as simple as an “employer’s market.” The reality we’re seeing: for many roles, things have slowed down—but for the most critical positions and strongest candidates, competition is still very real.

Whether you’re hiring, exploring, or just staying informed, the takeaway is the same: clarity and timing matter more than ever. The best opportunities—and the best people—don’t stay available for long.

Balancing Mission and Management: What to look for in a nonprofit CEO

What does 'strong candidate' actually mean? This piece uses nonprofit CEO hiring as an example: mission connection plus management capability, strategic vision, fundraising credibility, operational strength, board partnership skills, and team leadership. While most aren't hiring CEOs, these evaluation criteria apply across leadership roles. Define what 'strong' means before you start searching.

How can I efficiently make a target list of employers?

A client of mine recently read a job-search book which gave them actionable strategies for efficiently navigating their current search. One of their key take-aways from the book was the importance of creating a target list of employers. But where to start?

If you are open to working at literally any employer, you’re going to have a challenging time creating a target list. Instead, I’d do the following:

  • Narrow your scope of industry. So instead of project manager literally anywhere, project manager within a school district, nonprofit, or social services agency.
  • Next, identify at least 1-2 organizations in your target region (if you’re able to work in-person), and 1-2 remote. You will hopefully have a couple ideas in mind, but if not ask your network if they can recommend organizations or research within google or your AI assistant of choice.
  • Once you identify a handful, visit LinkedIn and find the company page of each employer. On the right side of the company page you’ll find a section called “Pages People Also Viewed” and you’ll want to scroll to the bottom and select “Show All”. This list will give you a sense of peer organizations to that target employer, and allow you to expand your target list.
  • You can also skip LinkedIn and prompt your AI assistant of choice. Here’s a prompt: “I’m generating a list of employers in the [insert industry] in [region]. Here is one example: [list the target employer]. Generate a comprehensive list of peer employers in the same industry and region.” You can play with the prompt to reflect remote roles, or only reflect employers that are hiring right now. Try it out and see what you learn!
  • Once you have this target list of employers, spend time on their website to learn about job openings and activate your network to look for potential introductions or insights about future roles. Attend their career fairs/networking events if applicable, or reach out to their recruiters if they welcome cold outreach about future opportunities. And of course, make sure to apply if you see an aligned opportunity!
