Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Keeping your network warm

Networking is one of the most strategic aspects of a successful job search. Done in combination with strong research and a high-quality job-seeking tool-kit (i.e. resume, LinkedIn profile, etc.), it can accelerate a job-seeker’s career search. I’m working with several clients on their networking strategy right now, and received a great question I’d love to address: “how do you keep in contact with networks you make despite not having anything to give or anything to ask?”
There are so many ways to keep your network “warm.” A client told me today that she has former colleagues who send an annual holiday card to professional contacts/stakeholders to share updates about their professional year-in-review. Other people make time to grab in-person or virtual coffee with mentors and others in their network. I play phone tag with former managers and colleagues as we do our best to find good times to catch up (it’s me, hi, i’m the problem it’s me, and I owe a few people updated dates to chat!).
Back to my client’s question on how to stay connected to your network despite not having anything to ask, offer, or update? Here’s how I answered them:
You don’t have to prioritize updates or contact with everyone in your network (and networks are vast - thousands of people who have come into your life through work, school, family, and community life). Consider identifying people who have been particularly resourceful to you in the past - they may have given you great feedback, connected you to jobs or hiring managers, or provided really thoughtful insight. If you choose to follow-up, just make sure it’s sincere, versus checking a box every six months. A note to say, “hey - here’s a quick note to share that I'm still implementing strategies you shared in our conversation 6 months ago. Thanks again for your time and insight. Let me know if I can ever support you!" can be powerful. Sometimes, what you have to “give” isn't anything more concrete than gratitude and recognition. And that is valuable.
