Every organization conducts a performance review process to assess the employee’s contribution, improvement areas & their future potential. That being said, if not conducted properly, this process can feel like a one sided affair to the employee. Learn how to make performance reviews beneficial for both the organizations and employees.

Many organizations espouse transparency as a core value, but it typically doesn’t extend to performance reviews. While leaders are often privy to our teams’ reviews, it’s rarely a two-way street. The result is that for many people, it’s uncomfortable to give and receive constructive feedback at work. The Chief Security Officer at Gusto did something unexpected to combat this issue - publicizing his performance review.

Some employees dread performance reviews; others leave them confused or wishing they got more from them. How can managers be considerate of the best way to deliver feedback? And how can they be more inclusive when giving evaluations?

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Why is there so much conflicting resume advice out there? How do I know which rules to follow?
|
|
|
A client recently came to me sharing they were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of conflicting resume advice out there for job seekers. They were hoping I could set the record straight. I couldn’t! The reason there is so much conflicting advice is because there are so many people out there who hire. These people have their own preferences and systems, and one person’s preference might be another person’s annoyance. So how do you cut through the noise?
I would recommend taking the time to talk to people with insight into the preferences within a particular industry or employer. Many employers who hire for a high volume of roles may host information sessions, office hours, or host/attend hiring events - this is a great way to learn more about submitting a strong application! If employers don’t provide this kind of access, consider activating your network to see if anyone you know has worked for this employer or knows someone else who has.
When in doubt, here are some best practices (not hard and fast rules) I follow on resumes:
- Boring resume formats (i.e. whatever you create in Microsoft office/google docs and save as a PDF) are ideal! They are easy for recruiters/managers to read and easy for you to create. The only time you need a creative resume is if you’re applying for a creative role.
- Focus on RESULTS in the story you tell on your resume and other job-seeking materials. The majority of recruiters and hiring managers don’t care about resume length or font, or whether or not you have the exact same number of bullets under each role in your resume. What they do care about is learning about your impact, and getting the chance to read real metrics about your experience.
- A 2 page resume is absolutely fine! If you’ve been losing sleep trying to cut out 3 lines from page 2, your time can be spent elsewhere. Most of my clients with at least 5-7 years of experience have a 2 page resume. More early career professionals have a 1 page resume. Executives (especially school system executives) will likely have a 3-4 page resume to account for all the departments/initiatives they oversee.
