Most weeks, clients and readers send in their job-search questions to be addressed in our weekly career corner. Check out this recent question and Ana’s answer: How do I determine what’s next professionally after experiencing burnout in Education?
Working and leading in the education sector during a global pandemic has pushed educators and education professionals in unprecedented ways. I connect with many who have been fueled and reinspired by these challenges, and others who have exhausted themselves both emotionally and physically. Wherever you stand, I want you to know I validate your experience. If you find yourself in the burnout camp, and considering what’s next, here are considerations:
- If possible, find time to rest and recharge. It is incredibly hard to reflect and make an informed decision when you’re exhausted and in survival mode. Whether that means taking time off, or simply making time for the things which fuel you (pursuing your hobbies, catching up with loved ones, seeing a therapist, sleep, etc.), recharging can be transformative when you’re experiencing burnout.
- Reflect - what is the root of your burnout? Is it the nature of your work schedule, the immense needs of the students/families you serve or the adults you manage, a specific colleague, or your commute? If many things burn you out, but you could only pick one or two things to change, what would likely alleviate the most stressors in your life?
- Next, can you alleviate the burnout by advocating for changes in your current role, transitioning to a new team/role, or do you need to make a bigger pivot (ie from working on a campus to finding a remote job at an edtech company, or relocating to live closer to family and friends)?
- Ask yourself, what are the biggest problems you’d like to spend your time solving at work to achieve clarity in your job search. It’s important to also be clear on the kinds of problems you don’t want to solve even if you are skilled and/or experienced in that area. This will inform the kinds of roles you target and how you strategically review job descriptions and network. For example, though I have years of experience planning or facilitating recruitment happy hours, hiring events, and new hire onboarding, I find all forms of event planning absolutely draining and would not pursue roles that would require me to dedicate time to that function (even though I am qualified for talent operations roles).
- Connect with people performing the kinds of roles you’re pursuing and ask thoughtful questions about their experiences. Though you might envision a remote role providing you with endless flexibility, you might find the demands of some of those positions not actually allowing for the breaks you envision (this has been my reality in past remote roles - the grass is not always greener on the other side!). Instead of assuming that new roles or industries can eliminate your past stressors, conduct research online and through conversations with employees, recruiters, or others with insight.

PLA is looking for an experienced contract and compliance manager with direct experience managing federal grants to be their Development Manager.
