Many members of the LGBTQ+ community are tired of “rainbow capitalism,” “pink washing,” and other forms of performative corporate allyship. It’s time for organizations to reconsider how they approach marketing and branding during Pride month.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
“How long should I wait before I…”
I get so many questions from clients about how long to wait before taking a particular action within the job seeking process. Here are some recommendations:
- How long to wait before sending a thank you email after an interview or networking meeting? The same day, while the conversation is fresh in your mind and you are on the hiring team’s mind as well.
- How soon after applying for a job should you wait before reaching out to the recruiter/hiring manager to find out if you’re still in the process? This is a hard one because of the variance in every hiring process. Some jobseekers have waited months for an update after applying (yes, even the update telling them they’d been invited to interview). But I would say the norm is probably closer to within two weeks. And then everything in-between. So with that in-mind, you can consider sending an email update to a recruiter, hiring manager, or generic HR email you find on the employer’s website, around two weeks after applying if you haven’t received an update of any kind. Here’s some sample language: “Dear [insert recruiter/hiring manager name], My name is [insert your name] and I submitted an application for the [insert position name] position on [date you applied]. I’m incredibly excited about this particular role and believe my background in [insert your relevant background] will allow me to add value to your team and [name of organization] quickly. Please let me know when I can expect an update back regarding my status in your hiring process. I appreciate your time and look forward to communication from your team.”
- How long before you send a follow-up email to a recruiter/hiring manager requesting an update following an interview? First, did they provide you with a timeline at the end of your call and has that time passed? If it has passed, feel free to email that day and respectfully reference the timeline which was initially shared and ask when you can expect an update (i.e. “[insert name of interviewer] shared that I could expect an update by [insert date] but I haven’t received communication from your team. Please let me know when I can expect an update. I’m looking forward to hearing from your team and thank you for your time and consideration.”). If they didn’t share a timeline, you can follow-up within a week of your conversation and ask when you can expect an update.
- How much time can you request that a hiring manager provide you before accepting/declining a job offer? I would say it’s standard for hiring managers to expect an answer within 48 - 72 hours. They want to bring you on as quickly as possible if you accept (which involves background checks and other clearances). They also want to be able to have the chance to offer another candidate the position if you decline, which is why a hiring manager has less flexibility than you might want. If you need more than 2-3 days, it’s reasonable to ask for up to 1-1.5 weeks in many situations (but everything is very role/org-specific).
