How do I position my resume for a career pivot?
|
|

March is the time of year when I begin hearing from school-based talent considering a pivot outside of campus-based roles. Though they often intend to stay in education, whether moving into a district-level role or to work at a K-12 nonprofit, consulting group, or edtech company, their resume often needs a makeover. Here are some tips for updating your resume for this kind of move:
- Include a headline under your name, or ensure your existing headline is aligned to your target roles and not your past role: For example, a Math teacher applying for a role writing curriculum for an edtech company could write a headline that says “Math Content Leader” versus “Math Teacher.”
- Include Career Highlights/Summary at the top of your resume that highlights big wins that are aligned to your target role. For example, if you are a current principal wanting to move into a nonprofit operations role, I’d want to see highlights about the budget you managed and other operations-related impact versus a focus on student achievement and curriculum writing.
- Audit your resume bullets: Do they provide ample evidence of work you’ve led related to your target role? For example, a college counselor wanting to move into partnerships could include many bullets about partnerships with local universities, test prep companies, and businesses.
- Review the Education and Professional Development section of your resume: have you listed a lot of past PD you’ve attended that has nothing to do with your target role? If so, delete it! It’s taking up valuable resume real-estate and distracts from your career pivot. At the same time, add new certifications (including those through Coursera or Google) to highlight new, relevant skills.
- If your education section is currently at the top of your resume, move it to the bottom. Unless you’re currently in business school or another aligned graduate program, it’s likely the least interesting thing about your candidate profile to a hiring team once you have work experience.

Meeting Street Schools (MSS), a unique network of five schools across South Carolina, was founded on the belief that all students can learn and deserve the opportunity to receive a high-quality education, regardless of their socio-economic background. It is the network's belief that a student’s zip code should not determine a student’s access to quality education. MSS is looking for an Operations expert to be their new Director of Operations. The Director of Operations will be responsible for overseeing all school-level operations, and directly managing a small team of school-based staff.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of work experience including supervisory and management experience. Prior experience working in a school or school system, knowledge of school data and operations systems, and/or South Carolina state law and compliance is strongly preferred.
