Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Do you have a job title that isn’t reflective of your actual job responsibilities, or perhaps isn’t the industry standard? Perhaps you're an Executive Assistant essentially serving in a Chief of Staff capacity, or your title is “Dean” but the majority of school districts in your region use the title “Assistant Principal.” Here are my tips for reflecting the scope of your work along with your current title:

  • Directly address the actual scope of your role: “Serve in a Chief of Staff capacity for a team of [insert team size], managing strategic planning, project management and team culture initiatives.”

  • Consider including the industry standard job title in parenthesis next to your actual job title: Dean of Students (MS Assistant Principal).

  • Separate your bullets (the standard way to describe your experience/results for each role) by job function (e.g.,for project management you can write: Project Management: Oversaw office’s transition to remote work during COVID for 85+ professionals within a 2-week window, creating communication plans and partnering with HR, IT, and Finance Directors to secure and disseminate appropriate technology.

Don’t wait for a recruiter or hiring manager to connect the dots about your past work experience and the needs on their team. Shape the path for them!
