Conversations I’m having with my clients these days

In my conversations with clients over the last few months, I find that many are seeking my insight on the current hiring landscape and trends in job seeking. See below for what I’m sharing:

This market is different. For those of us in the education/social impact sector, the closest recent comparison I can give is April 2020. During this period, folks in otherwise stable jobs found themselves in very unstable professional situations. A month into the pandemic, life as we knew it had changed. Schools were closed for an indefinite amount of time. Many in my network were furloughed. Hiring freezes abounded. While the circumstances and context is different, we are also seeing dramatic and unexpected changes to funding and organizational priorities. Many employers are scaling back their operations to weather this storm. Hiring freezes abound and roles are being eliminated.

Education and Nonprofit professionals aren’t the only ones experiencing instability in this market. I’ve worked with and talked to folks navigating layoffs across every industry, in all kinds of roles. They are job searching right now too.

What can you do with this information?

  1. If you’re currently employed, but unhappy, consider staying until you have another offer letter in hand. When you land that new role, ask about the organization’s finances and financial stability given how they’re funded before quitting your current gig.
  2. Expand your search beyond brand name employers. Even if you have several former colleagues who moved to those organizations a few years ago, during a period of growth, it’s likely you will have a much harder time landing those same roles at this time. Keep an open mind as you explore roles and organizations.
  3. Think about your job search and the roles you are targeting similar to a college application process, ranking opportunities as safety, target, or stretch. Safety roles are roles that you extra, extra-qualified for - perhaps you’ve already held that job title at a peer organization in the past (for example a former teacher/campus leader who is now a  senior program manager at an education nonprofit applying to teaching or assistant principal roles at a school district, or perhaps you are a Director at a nonprofit now and you are applying for a manager role on a similar team). Target roles are lateral moves within peer organizations (same scope of work, same job title, peer organization). You should be 100% qualified for the target roles, with explicit experience (not transferable). Stretch roles are promotions or industry pivots (for example an assistant principal applying to be a customer success manager at an EdTech company, or a nonprofit L&D manager applying for Instructional Designer position at a remote tech company). You can apply to roles in all 3 buckets, but spend most of your time applying for safety and target roles, especially early into your job search versus out of desperation later on (in this market - in more abundant times you can focus more on stretch!).
  4. Submit strong, customized materials! I write regularly about best practices in resume writing, LinkedIn profile optimizing, cover letter writing, and more.
  5. Leverage AI tools to optimize your search. Conduct research to understand who is hiring in your city and industry, improve your resume, generate ideas/outlines for cover letters (but personalize and make it your own!), and more.
  6. Activate your network. Do this via LinkedIn posts, personalized outreach via email and text, and more. People want to help, but often don’t know how. Your network can help by making introductions to hiring managers, providing feedback on your application materials, sharing job openings, and more.
  7. Focus on upskilling. Review job descriptions in your desired field and industry and identify top desired skills required or in the “must have” sections. Gain fluency in AI, new software, and other technical skills. Make sure you reflect the knowledge and certifications acquired on your resume and LinkedIn profile.

I believe knowledge is power. It’s why I became a teacher early in my career. The information above isn’t meant to scare or depress, but rather help you craft a strategic approach to job searching at this time. My clients and others in my network are still landing great jobs right now, but with a bit more elbow grease than in previous years.
